Understanding the concern

Small lesions,
properly assessed.

Milia and skin tags are common, usually benign concerns, but they are not the same. A clinical assessment confirms whether a lesion is suitable for treatment and whether it should instead be reviewed by a GP or dermatologist.

What you may notice
  • Firm white or cream-coloured milia
  • Soft flesh-coloured or brown skin tags
  • Lesions that catch on clothing or jewellery
  • Small bumps that have not responded to skincare
01

Why it can happen

Milia form when keratin becomes trapped beneath the skin and may appear spontaneously or after irritation or injury. Skin tags are soft growths containing collagen fibres and vessels, commonly found in skin folds and areas of friction.

02

How we assess it

Emma examines the lesion’s appearance, location and history. Anything changing, bleeding unexpectedly, unusually pigmented or uncertain in diagnosis is not treated cosmetically until it has received appropriate medical review.

03

Options we may discuss

Suitable milia may be treated by careful professional extraction or another selected method. Suitable skin tags may be removed using an appropriate clinic-based technique. The method and likely downtime depend on the lesion and area.

04

Important to know

Do not pick, squeeze, cut or attempt to remove a lesion at home. This can cause bleeding, infection, scarring and delayed diagnosis of something that is not a simple milia or skin tag.

This information is general and is not a diagnosis. New, changing, bleeding or otherwise concerning skin lesions should be assessed by an appropriate medical professional.
