Acne can leave changes in colour, texture or both. “Acne scarring” is therefore not one single concern: accurate assessment matters because depressed scars, raised scars and post-inflammatory pigmentation respond differently.

What you may notice

Indented boxcar, ice-pick or rolling scars
Raised hypertrophic or keloid scars
Post-inflammatory red or brown marks
Ongoing acne alongside established scarring

Why it can happen

Scarring develops when inflammation disrupts the skin’s normal repair process. Deep cystic acne carries a greater risk, while picking or squeezing can prolong inflammation and increase the chance of marks or scars. Genetics, skin type and the duration of active acne also influence the pattern.

How we assess it

Emma examines the type, depth and distribution of scarring and checks whether acne is still active. Skin tone, sensitivity, previous treatment, medication and the emotional impact of the concern all help shape a realistic plan.

Options we may discuss

Depending on the scar type, options may include medical skincare, chemical peels, microneedling, laser treatment, carefully selected injectable treatment or a staged combination. Active acne may need to be stabilised before scar-focused procedures begin.

Important to know

Complete removal of acne scarring is rarely realistic, but texture and colour can often be improved. Results usually require time, a course of treatment and careful sun protection.
