Understanding the concern

Dark circles,
different causes.

Dark circles can make the under-eye area look shadowed even when you feel well rested. For some people the colour has always been there; for others it becomes more noticeable over time. Pigmentation, thin skin and the shape of the area can each contribute. Emma’s consultation looks closely at these differences so that any advice or treatment addresses your particular concern.

What you may notice
  • Brown, blue or purple tones beneath the eyes
  • Hollows that cast a shadow in certain lighting
  • Darkness that remains despite a good night’s sleep
  • Puffiness alongside under-eye shadows
  • Fine lines or delicate, crepey under-eye skin
01

Why it can happen

Genetics and natural skin tone can influence under-eye colour. Thin skin may allow underlying vessels to show through, while changes in facial volume can create hollows and shadows. Allergies, rubbing and irritation may also contribute. Poor sleep can make existing circles more noticeable, but is not always the cause. Several factors often overlap, which is why a single eye cream or procedure may not address the whole picture.

02

How we assess it

Emma considers the colour, skin quality, contour and any puffiness beneath your eyes. She asks when the change began, whether it varies, and about allergies, skincare, medical history and previous treatment in the area. The assessment helps separate pigment from shadowing and identify issues that need medical attention. You will also discuss how much improvement is realistic and whether a treatment is suitable for your anatomy.

03

Options we may discuss

Advice may begin with gentle skincare, sun protection and addressing irritation or allergies with appropriate medical support. If hollowing contributes, carefully selected treatment may be discussed, but filler is not suitable for every under-eye concern and does not remove pigment. Skin-quality options may be considered separately, with their evidence and limitations explained. Significant bags or loose eyelid skin may be better assessed by an eye specialist or surgeon.

04

Important to know

The under-eye area needs a cautious approach. Filler can cause persistent swelling, unevenness or a blue-grey appearance, and rare serious complications include damage to the blood supply and vision. All proposed treatments require an individual discussion of risks and alternatives. Complete removal of dark circles may not be achievable. New one-sided darkness or swelling warrants medical review; pain or changes in vision need urgent assessment.

This information is general and is not a diagnosis. New, changing, bleeding or otherwise concerning skin lesions should be assessed by an appropriate medical professional.
