Sofwave is one of the most interesting developments in non-surgical skin rejuvenation: an advanced ultrasound treatment designed to support the skin’s own renewal processes without needles, incisions or a lengthy recovery period.

At Wedgwood Medical, we use technology selectively. A device earns its place in our treatment portfolio because its mechanism is credible, its safety profile is understood and it can contribute meaningfully to a carefully considered plan. Sofwave meets those criteria—and offers an innovative option for patients concerned about skin laxity, fine lines and a gradual loss of definition.

What makes Sofwave different?

Sofwave uses proprietary Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam technology, known as SUPERB™, to deliver controlled ultrasound energy into the mid-dermis. This is the layer of skin in which collagen and elastin provide important structural support.

The energy creates precise thermal zones centred at approximately 1.5 mm beneath the surface. This controlled heating stimulates the body’s natural wound-healing response and encourages the remodelling of collagen and elastin over time. Crucially, Sofwave’s integrated Sofcool™ system cools and monitors the skin surface during treatment.

It is this combination of targeted depth, parallel-beam ultrasound and active surface cooling that makes the platform so innovative. Treatment is designed to stimulate the supportive architecture of the skin while avoiding surgery and limiting disruption to the epidermis and deeper structures.

What can Sofwave help to improve?

Sofwave may be considered when the aim is to improve skin quality and achieve a subtle, natural-looking lifting effect. Depending on individual anatomy and clinical suitability, treatment may help with:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Mild-to-moderate laxity around the face and neck
  • Loss of definition beneath the chin and along the jawline
  • A heavy or lowered appearance around the brows
  • Skin laxity on selected body areas, including the upper arms
  • Selected acne scarring concerns

The Sofwave system has received multiple U.S. FDA clearances for indications including improving facial lines and wrinkles, lifting the eyebrow, lifting lax submental and neck tissue, improving upper-arm laxity and treating acne scars. These clearances are useful evidence of the technology’s development, but they do not replace an individual medical consultation or guarantee a particular result.

Collagen remodelling rather than instant transformation

Sofwave is not intended to make the face look “done”, nor is it a substitute for surgery where significant tissue repositioning is required. Its appeal lies in gradual change. By stimulating new collagen and elastin, the treatment supports firmer, smoother and more resilient-looking skin while preserving the character of the face.

Some patients notice an early improvement, but collagen remodelling is a biological process. Results usually develop progressively over the weeks following treatment, with improvement commonly assessed at around three months. The number of sessions and any future maintenance are decided according to skin condition, treatment area, goals and clinical response.

What is treatment like?

A Sofwave appointment begins with a detailed consultation and assessment. We consider the quality and degree of laxity, facial anatomy, medical history, previous procedures and what the patient would realistically like to achieve. If treatment is appropriate, topical anaesthetic may be used and the handpiece is applied systematically to the planned areas.

Patients generally describe pulses of warmth as the ultrasound energy is delivered. Treatment time varies by area, but a facial session is often completed within approximately 30–45 minutes. Downtime is usually limited, although temporary redness, tenderness or swelling can occur. Full aftercare and an appropriate review plan are provided.

Who may be suitable for Sofwave?

Sofwave can be a useful option for adults noticing early or moderate skin laxity who want a non-surgical approach with little interruption to everyday life. Because ultrasound energy is not dependent on pigment in the same way as some light-based treatments, the technology can be considered across a broad range of skin tones. Suitability must still be assessed individually.

It will not be right for everyone. Pregnancy, active wounds or severe inflammation in the treatment area, certain medical conditions, medicines or recent treatments may make Sofwave unsuitable or require postponement. This is why consultation-led treatment matters.

Why Sofwave at Wedgwood Medical?

Technology is only as valuable as the judgement behind it. At Wedgwood Medical, Sofwave is not recommended simply because it is advanced or popular. Emma Wedgwood assesses the whole picture: skin quality, facial structure, health, lifestyle, previous treatment and the patient’s priorities.

Sometimes Sofwave is an excellent standalone treatment. Sometimes it works best as one part of a staged skin-health plan. And sometimes a different approach—or no treatment at all—is the more appropriate recommendation. Our aim is always a clear, realistic plan designed around the individual rather than a trend.

Could Sofwave be right for you?

If you are concerned about laxity, fine lines or a gradual loss of firmness, a consultation can help establish whether Sofwave is likely to address what you are noticing. We will explain the options, expected timescale, limitations, risks and alternatives so you can make an informed decision.

All treatments are subject to consultation and clinical suitability. Results vary between individuals.
